Diet Soda Linked to Weight Gain, Higher Risk of Liver Disease

Diet soda drinks are often marketed using terms like “zero sugar” or “zero calories,” implying that they are beneficial for weight management. However, a recent study has found that diet soda consumption is linked to both weight gain and a higher risk of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD).

MASLD (formerly nonalcoholic fatty liver disease or NAFLD) is one of the most common forms of liver disease that affects an estimated 46% of people globally. There is currently no treatment for MASLD, and it can eventually lead to liver scarring and cirrhosis.

The study analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) and included a total of 2,378 participants. After adjusting for a variety of other dietary factors, researchers determined that higher diet soda intake was strongly associated with a greater risk of MASLD.

A link between diet soda consumption and increased body mass index (BMI) was also noted and believed to be a main contributing factor to the higher risk of MASLD. Although more research is needed to confirm these findings, the study results do correspond with recent guidelines advising against using non-sugar sweeteners (found in diet soda) for weight control.

Key Risk Factors, Prevention Strategies for Early-Onset Dementia Revealed

Cases of early-onset dementia – defined as a diagnosis before age 65 – have been trending upward with an estimated 370,000 new cases each year. Some new research has now revealed the 15 biggest risk factors for early-onset dementia, many of which can be addressed through lifestyle changes.

“Young-onset dementia has a very serious impact, because the people affected usually still have a job, children, and a busy life,” said Dr Stevie Hendriks, study author. “The cause is often assumed to be genetic…This is why we also wanted to investigate other risk factors in this study.”

The study followed over 350,000 participants under age 65 for 11-15 years. Several modifiable risk factors for early-onset dementia were identified: vitamin D deficiency, alcohol use disorder, social isolation, and lower handgrip strength. Having diabetes, depression, hearing impairment, or heart disease was also linked to a greater risk of early-onset dementia.

“This is the largest and most robust study of its kind ever conducted,” said Professor David Llewellyn, study author. “Excitingly, for the first time it reveals that we may be able to take action to reduce risk of this debilitating condition, through targeting a range of different factors.”

Speed Through Healthy Meal Prep

To get on track (or back on track) with healthy eating, cooking from scratch is key, but you absolutely need the right knife to keep food prep from becoming a frustrating chore.

If you’ve ever tried to chop vegetables with a blunt knife, you know the frustration for yourself firsthand. What should take minutes (or seconds) ends up being a drawn-out process that you use brute force to get through. This common roadblock to healthy eating is exactly why Chef’s Foundry developed their professional grade P600 Ceramic Knives. These easy-to-handle knives cut through all types of food and produce like butter and are made from zirconium ceramic, which is 10x harder and sharper than steel. They also keep their edge for longer than any other blade and are more affordable than regular steel knives.

See for yourself how the P600 knives slice right through veggies (and a watermelon) AND get up to 75% off right here.

Common Causes of Vaginal Dryness + Top Tips to Relieve It

Vaginal dryness occurs most frequently during and after menopause but can affect women of all ages. The most common cause is low estrogen levels, which often happen during menopause and in response to certain hormone treatments. Diet and medications, especially those that cause dry eyes, also have an impact. Scented feminine products, hot water, and bubble baths can worsen or contribute to dryness, while vaginal moisturizers and small amounts of pure plant oils can help (More)

Fatty Foods Make Stress Worse, Antioxidant Foods Can Help

Foods high in fat and low in nutrients appear to impair the body’s ability to recover from stress, according to a recent study. High-fat foods also promoted a more negative mood during and after a stressful event. Unfortunately, this is exactly the type of food many people turn to when stressed, but a better alternative may be antioxidant-rich foods or snacks. They actually helped protect against some of the negative physical effects of stress and may boost mood as well. (More)

Radon May Have Added Dangers for People With Ischemic Stroke

Radon is a radioactive gas that can enter homes and become an indoor air pollutant. It’s already linked to lung cancer, but a recent study found that it may pose even more health risks for stroke survivors. More specifically, radon was associated with a higher risk of a condition known as clonal hematopoiesis of indeterminate potential (CHIP), which in turn is linked to blood cancers and heart disease. Testing is currently the only way to determine if home radon levels are high. (See tips for a radon-free home below ↓) (More)

Mindfulness + Exercise Are Powerful Combo for Mood, Health

Exercise and mindfulness are both research-backed ways to improve overall health, but combining them may have even more powerful effects than doing one or the other. For example, mindfulness can actually stimulate motivation to keep exercising (or get started) and helps the brain to deal with the discomfort associated with physical activity. Exercise, of course, has numerous physical benefits but may be most beneficial for mental health when combined with mindfulness practices. (More)

14 Ways to Make Your Vitamins / Supplements More Effective

Quality is always key when choosing a vitamin or supplement, but there are also other strategies you can use to increase their effectiveness. Learning which vitamins are fat- or water-soluble (and taking them accordingly) is a good step as is finding out which nutrients pair best – iron and vitamin C, for example. Consider adding probiotics or digestive enzymes to your routine to enhance nutrient absorption and avoid consuming caffeine at the same time as certain supplements. Also, opt for the natural version of vitamins for the best bioavailability. (More)
